<image:title>About - I am a journalist. I report and I write - mostly about health and science. My work has appeared in several national magazines and one college text book. In May of 2018, I joined the New York Times as both a member of the Editorial Board and a writer for the magazine. Before that, I was the lead health reporter at Consumer Reports, where I covered the intersection of science, medicine and regulatory policy. I was also a 2013 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where I focused on global health and the history of medicine, and a 2014 Pulitzer Traveling grantee, for which I reported on the Hungarian Roma community. In my past life, I was a wandering scientist. I studied climate change in the Arctic; epigenetics in a Harvard immunology lab; and behavioral conditioning in alcohol-addicted rats. I also formulated vaccines in a pharmaceutical lab. I have a B.A. in biology (from Rutgers University) and an M.A. in environmental science and M.S. in journalism (both from Columbia University). I was born in Medellin, Colombia, adopted by Sicilian-Americans, and raised in Central New Jersey. I live in Manhattan with my husband and a cat who was originally named Isis but is now called Tiny. I am represented by Jay Mandel of William Morris Endeavor.</image:title>
